A key part of the controversial $7.8 billion Keystone XL pipeline is in jeopardy, and it’s not clear when that will happen.
Keystone XL is scheduled to start operating on Sunday and will carry crude oil from Canada’s tar sands to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast.
The line’s main obstacle, which will likely be a massive pipeline rupture, will be a spill in northern Alberta.
That will threaten to tear up about 1,000 miles of pipe, destroying it and forcing the Keystone to be restarted, according to a new study from the Natural Resources Defense Council.
It will also require an extensive cleanup of the area around the ruptured section.
The group estimates the spill will take two years to clean up.
The report comes amid rising tensions in North Dakota over the state’s refusal to allow construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, which is to carry Bakken oil through North Dakota.
President Donald Trump has made no secret of his desire to see the pipeline built, even after the Obama administration ordered it stopped.
Trump has said the pipeline, which would carry more than 470,000 barrels of oil per day from the Bakken shale to refiners along the Midwest, is “not a pipeline for North Dakota.”
The president has also made a point of avoiding saying anything about the pipeline at the presidential campaign.
He has also criticized TransCanada, the company building the pipeline.
Trump said during a rally in North Carolina on Monday that the pipeline is a “bad deal” for the country.
“And we’re going to be very angry about it, and we’re just going to keep fighting and keep going, but it’s a bad deal, and that’s all,” Trump said.
The pipeline was built by TransCanada in a joint venture with the Energy Transfer Partners (ETP) company.
ETP’s parent company is owned by Energy Transfer Capital, the same company behind the Keystone XL.
The United States has built nearly 1,200 miles of pipelines to carry oil to U.S. refineries.
The Keystone XL would be the most expensive pipeline ever built and would carry nearly half of the nation’s oil.
It is also among the most environmentally harmful.
